The launch of the Food Safety and Security Authority
marks a historic milestone for Malta, bringing together,
for the first time, all functions related to and
security under one national framework.
There are moments in a country’s progress
that redefine the way things are done.
The official launch of the Food Safety and
Security Authority was one of those moments
- a decisive step towards a safer, more
transparent, and more sustainable food system for Malta
and Gozo.
Established under Maltese law, the Authority’s mission is
clear: to safeguard public health and ensure that every
product that enters, is produced, processed, or sold on
the Maltese market meets the highest national, European,
and international standards.
Its remit covers the entire
food chain, from primary production to processing,
distribution, and final consumption.
The creation of the Authority represents a new level of trust and coordination between producers, operators, consumers, and institutions. It is designed not only to regulate but to collaborate - to build a culture of responsibility and confidence in food safety, sustainability, and traceability.
As was emphasised during the launch ceremony held on the 13th of October, the establishment of the Authority is not only a regulatory milestone but also a social commitment. It strengthens the bridge between those who produce food and those who consume it, ensuring that what reaches every household and establishment is safe, genuine, and of the highest quality.
The timing of the launch, just days before World Food Day, was fitting. This year’s theme - “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future” - perfectly reflects the spirit of cooperation at the heart of the new Authority’s mission.
The Authority will serve as a centre for scientific excellence and collaboration, working closely with local, European, and international entities to promote innovation, enhance crisis preparedness, and ensure the resilience of Malta’s food supply.
For those in the HORECA sector, the benefits are tangible. A strong and transparent food safety system enhances consumer confidence and strengthens business reputations.
By aligning national food control measures under one structure, the Authority supports food operators, caterers, and restaurateurs in meeting their obligations efficiently, while also providing the assurance that the food they prepare and serve is fully compliant with the highest standards of safety and quality.
Food safety, however, is not only about compliance
or business. It is about people. It is about the farmers,
fishermen, and food operators who uphold standards
every day.
It is about the families who deserve to know
that what they eat is safe and wholesome. And it is about
future generations, whose well-being depends on the
integrity of the food systems we build today.
With the establishment of the Food Safety and Security
Authority, Malta has taken a major step forward in
protecting both public health and economic resilience.
The Authority looks forward to working hand in hand with
all operators across the food chain - from producers
to consumers - to build a food system that is safe,
sustainable, and trusted by all.
