The inaugural season of MasterChef Malta brought together some of the island's most talented home cooks, each vying for the coveted title.
As the competition heated up, three finalists emerged, each bringing their unique flair and passion to the table.
In this editorial, we delve into the experiences of Ray George Cassar, Nicky Bezzina, and David Camilleri Duca, exploring their most memorable moments, culinary inspirations, and future aspirations.
Nicky Bezzina:
The Organised Winner
For Nicky Bezzina, winning MasterChef Malta was a testament to his meticulous preparation and organisational skills. His most memorable moment was receiving the white apron. "It’s when you start believing you're part of the show," Nicky says. The pasta challenge, with its high stakes and potential for mistakes, was a pivotal point for him.
Nicky's background as a dental surgeon influenced his approach to cooking. "Organised, time-efficient, clean – my culinary prep is akin to preparing for surgery," he explains. This precision and attention to detail were crucial in his success on the show.
One of the biggest lessons Nicky learned was the importance of seasoning. "Every detail matters: texture, consistency, seasoning," he emphasises. The detailed feedback from the judges helped him refine his techniques week by week.
Despite his victory, Nicky remains committed to his career in dentistry, viewing MasterChef as a personal challenge rather than a career shift. His advice for future contestants is clear: "Be organised. Plan, follow your plan, and go with it. It's the golden rule for success."
David Camilleri Duca:
The Versatile Visionary
David Camilleri Duca's MasterChef journey was a rollercoaster of emotions and growth. "From disbelief at making it to the finals to gaining confidence each week, it was a whirlwind," he reflects. Winning the rabbit challenge and presenting his final dishes were standout moments, but the semi-final challenge pushed him to his limits. "Replicating MICHELIN-starred Chef Grigoris Kikis' dish was daunting and exhilarating," he shares.
David's culinary style was shaped by his grandmother's traditional recipes and his experiences in London. "London exposed me to diverse cuisines and elevated dining experiences," he explains. These experiences fostered a love for creative and versatile cooking.
The competition's intensity was one of the biggest challenges for David. "Balancing the rigorous filming schedule with personal commitments was tough," he admits. Despite the exhaustion, the camaraderie among the contestants provided much-needed support.
Looking ahead, David dreams of opening a food truck or a cosy eatery with his brother. "A small menu featuring signature dishes and seasonal offerings, focusing on fresh, locally sourced ingredients," he envisions. The judges' feedback, especially on his pastry skills, was invaluable. "Their constructive criticism pushed me to improve rapidly," he notes.
Ray George Cassar:
A Sweet Journey
Ray George Cassar's journey on MasterChef Malta was filled with many significant achievements. "I have two memorable moments: being handed the first grey apron ever on MasterChef Malta and winning the brownie challenge with my signature dish," Ray recalls. These milestones not only highlighted his skills but also boosted his confidence throughout the competition.
Ray's culinary journey was deeply influenced by his father. "We used to prepare desserts together, especially the traditional Trifle with krema from scratch," he shares. This early exposure to cooking, combined with his professional attention to detail and cleanliness, shaped his approach in the kitchen.
However, the competition was not without its challenges. "Not knowing what’s coming next and the high level of competition were tough," Ray admits. His strategy to overcome these obstacles involved extensive research and a focus on presenting the best possible dish.
Looking to the future, Ray dreams of opening his own food truck, offering elevated classic food. The feedback from judges, particularly regarding his pastry skills, has been a significant source of encouragement. "The Chefs' appraisal gave me the confidence to try something new, especially in pastry challenges," Ray reflects.
A Culinary Future
The journeys of Ray, Nicky, and David on MasterChef Malta Season 1 highlight the passion, dedication, and resilience required in the culinary world. Each finalist brought their unique strengths to the competition, learned valuable lessons, and has exciting plans for the future.
Whether it's Ray's dream of a food truck, Nicky's continued exploration of culinary challenges, or David's vision of a family-run eatery, their stories inspire aspiring chefs and food enthusiasts alike.
As MasterChef Malta paves the way for new talent, the legacy of its first season's finalists will undoubtedly continue to influence and inspire.
