More than 25 years ago, Carlo Micallef embarked on a remarkable journey at the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), which marked the beginning of a fruitful and enduring chapter in his career.
With a continuous learning mindset and an unwavering passion for destination marketing and tourism, he worked his way up the ladder, eventually ascending to the prestigious role of CEO.
Under his leadership, Malta’s tourism industry has witnessed tremendous growth and diversification, achieving record-breaking performances in the past decade. From Humble Beginnings to the Top
Carlo’s journey at the MTA began in 1997 when he joined as a Business Management & Marketing graduate. Embracing a continuous learning mindset and drawing from valuable experiences, he steadily progressed through various positions within the Marketing Directorate.
As Chief Marketing Officer, Carlo spearheaded initiatives to overhaul the MTA’s overseas marketing, branding, PR, and advertising efforts, resulting in consecutive record-breaking performances in tourism over the past decade.
Carlo’s Vision for Malta’s Tourism
Over the past 10 years, Malta’s tourism approach has evolved significantly. The MTA expanded its offerings to attract visitors from various European countries and beyond, developing specific product segments tailored to different interests. The marketing strategy now focuses on segment and niche targeting, leveraging digital marketing technologies to reach the intended audience effectively.
Recognizing the need for innovation, Carlo has been at the forefront of embracing new technologies to enhance the tourism experience. From virtual and augmented reality experiences to mobile apps and chatbots, the MTA is revolutionising how tourists interact with the destination and receive information.
Enhancing Air Connectivity
Air connectivity plays a crucial role in Malta’s tourism industry, with 99% of visitors arriving by air. Carlo has spearheaded a route development program that has expanded flight connections to European airports, positioning Malta International Airport as a major European hub.
The island’s strong long-haul flight connections through various international airports have further cemented its status as a top travel destination.
A Visionary Future for Malta’s Tourism
Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Carlo and the MTA remain optimistic about the future of Malta’s tourism. The Malta Tourism Strategy 2021-2030 outlines their vision for recovery and revitalization post-pandemic.
Emphasising sustainable development and aligning with global standards, the strategy aims to elevate the tourism experience in Malta to international standards of excellence.
A Day in the Life of Carlo Micallef
As CEO, Carlo’s day is filled with a wide range of
responsibilities. From early mornings checking emails
to meeting with the Minister for Tourism and other key
stakeholders, his days are dynamic and eventful.
He
values face-to-face interactions with his team and
employees, ensuring their engagement and addressing
matters promptly. Leading numerous meetings, both
routine and strategic, Carlo dedicates himself to steering
the MTA towards its goals.
