The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) is celebrating a significant milestone in 2024–the 25th anniversary of dedicated service since its inception.
Over the past years, the MTA has been instrumental in transforming Malta into a premier tourist destination and fostering a sustainable future for the tourism industry.
The Malta Tourism Authority was established in 1999 under the Malta Travel and Tourism Service Act, which expanded the MTA’s role beyond that of international marketing to include domestic coordination, regulation, licensing, and development of the Maltese tourism sector. The MTA has since become the central entity responsible for driving Malta’s tourism strategy, ensuring quality, encouraging industry relationships, and promoting the islands as a must-visit destination.
Prior to the establishment of the MTA, Malta’s tourism affairs were managed by the National Tourism Organisation of Malta (NTOM) and before that, the Malta Government Tourist Board. These predecessors laid the groundwork for the tourism sector in Malta, but the establishment of the MTA marked a new era of strategic planning and thorough management of the tourism sector.
The authority has a diverse role within the tourism industry. Apart from being a regulator and motivator in the local industry, the MTA is also a business partner and Malta’s brand promoter with various functions to sustain tourism growth and ensure quality service and tourism. Hence, these functions have been transformed in various areas within the MTA that have served the country and worked tirelessly over the last 25 years to bring tourism to where it stands today.
Looking ahead, the MTA remains committed to sustainability in tourism, exploring new markets, and providing ongoing training for industry professionals. The focus will be on enhancing the visitor experience, ensuring that Malta remains a top destination for years to come.
As the MTA celebrates its 25th anniversary, it reflects on a legacy of success and looks forward to a future of continued growth and innovation. Through its comprehensive approach to tourism management, strategic marketing, and commitment to quality, the MTA has positioned Malta as a leading destination in the Mediterranean. The future promises even greater achievements as the MTA continues to drive sustainable tourism and enhance Malta's global appeal.
Anniversary Exhibition
To commemorate this special anniversary, the MTA will host an exhibition from the 2nd to the 12th of September at MUŻA, Valletta. This exhibition will showcase the MTA’s journey over the past 25 years, highlighting key milestones, achievements, and future plans. Visitors will gain insight into the various facets of the authority, from its marketing strategies to its sustainability initiatives. It promises to be an enriching experience, celebrating the dedication and hard work that have made Malta a top-tier tourist destination.
We hope to see you there to celebrate this remarkable journey and look forward to the future of tourism in Malta!
