Relying primarily on the indigenous varieties Ġellewża and Girgentina, local producers struggled to stand out against the global rise of international varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and others. A modest Wine Act introduced in 1969 and some shelter by protective levies on imports provided some direction and breathing space for local producers to regroup and rethink their direction.
The nineties saw the island’s leading wineries take the bull by the horns and steer the industry towards a new direction, taking great risks and investing heavily. They rolled up their sleeves and took the peculiar character of our wine market head on.
Without enthusiastic support from local drinkers who still blindly assumed that local wines were not up to foreign standards and with international bottles flooding our small market, one would have forgiven our wineries to lay down their arms. Instead, they dug deep, bit the proverbial bullet and pushed on.
Malta’s accession to the European Union in 2004 exposed the islands to fierce global competition but also ushered in a new era of quality standards.
The introduction of DOK regulations in 2007 aligned Maltese wines with respected European appellation systems and inspired a new generation of winemakers. Today, Malta and Gozo’s wine landscape remains small but resilient, with ten DOK-registered wineries ( 8 in Malta and 2 in Gozo) producing just over 1.8 million bottles annually, rooted in history yet looking firmly toward the future while dealing with a fresh wave of challenges.
Josef Bonello
Anointed by the god Bacchus himself as one of his most loyal prophets, Joséf was entrusted with the sacred mission of bringing wine to people very early on in his adult life. Spreading his mantra that age improves with wine, he has now been delivering the good news for almost three decades, saving many a poor soul from being lost to meagre pleasures of other earthly potions by helping them see the light eternal, as seen through a gleaming goblet of wine of the finest.
