It is with great pride to reflect on the historic moment for Malta’s presence in North America: a week of significant progress in our ongoing efforts to enhance visibility, accessibility and appeal of the Maltese Islands on the North American market.
In September, the Malta Tourism Authority reached an important milestone that has strengthened Malta’s reputation as a destination of excellence.
The announcement by Delta Air Lines of the first-ever non-stop flights between New York’s JFK Airport and Malta, commencing in Summer 2026, represents a historic step forward in our connectivity with the United States.
This development will not only make Malta more accessible to the North American traveller, but will also create deeper social, cultural, and economic exchanges between the two nations.
Also significant, was the inauguration of the MTA’s new North American office in New York City, situated within Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
This permanent presence highlights our long-term commitment to the region and provides a strategic platform for collaboration with our partners across tourism, media, and trade.
Furthermore, Malta’s profile was additionally elevated through the U.S. premiere of Hidden Malta, the new PBS special by Emmy Award-winning journalist Peter Greenberg, which excellently captured the islands’ authentic culture and lesser-known treasures.
The week culminated in Toronto with an exclusive Four Hands dinner, an outstanding collaboration between Maltese Chef Hiram Cassar and Canadian Chef Patrick Kriss.
This culinary excellence showcased Malta’s emerging gastronomic quality and creative vitality.
Collectively, these achievements signify a transformative chapter in Malta’s tourism story — one that reinforces our islands’ growing stature as a leading Mediterranean destination of culture, character, and quality
Written by Dr Charles Mangion - Malta Tourism Authority Chairman
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) was formally set up by the Malta Travel and Tourism Service Act (1999). This clearly defines its role - extending it beyond that of international marketing to include a domestic, motivating, directional, co-ordinating and regulatory role. The Act strengthens the public and private partnership in tourism through greater and more direct participation by the private sector in national planning and development of the industry.
