Kurt Micallef: Head Chef at Fernando's, Sliema
Q: Do you think that the level you present at Fernando's is attractive to the quality of tourists locally?
A: At Fernando’s, we strive to offer an exceptional dining experience that caters to both locals and tourists who appreciate high-quality cuisine. However, the challenge lies in attracting the type of tourists who truly value and seek out this level of dining.
While there are certainly visitors who are drawn to the refined culinary experiences we offer, the broader issue is that the majority of tourists currently visiting Malta may not prioritize or even seek out premium dining options.
Our aim is to present a standard that would attract discerning travelers, but there’s a need for a wider appeal to those who appreciate and are willing to invest in quality experiences.
Q: Do you think that the MICHELIN accolade limits your reach, both for locals and visitors? Do you think that visiting a MICHELIN restaurant is seen as a 'bucket list' experience, with repeat visits not really intended?
A: I hope not. The MICHELIN accolade is certainly a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a mark of excellence that draws attention from both locals and tourists, putting Fernando’s on the map as a must-visit destination.
However, there’s a perception that dining at a MICHELIN restaurant is a one-time, bucket-list experience, rather than a place you’d frequent regularly. We work hard to counter this notion by ensuring that our menu is accessible and inviting for repeat visits.
The goal is to create an atmosphere where guests, whether local or visiting, feel that they can return time and again to enjoy a memorable meal, rather than seeing it as a once-off indulgence.
Q: What solutions can you offer to improve the attraction of high-quality tourists, intending to visit restaurants like Fernando's?
A: To attract high-quality tourists, we need to focus on the overall environment and infrastructure, not just the dining experience. Clean and well-maintained streets, efficient garbage collection, and a higher standard of lifestyle commodities are essential.
These improvements would not only enhance the appeal for tourists but also improve the quality of life for locals. In areas like Sliema, and other entertainment districts around the islands, investing in these aspects is crucial. It’s about creating an inviting atmosphere where tourists feel comfortable and locals are proud of their surroundings.
A well-kept environment contributes significantly to the overall experience and makes destinations like Fernando’s more appealing to those who seek out quality in every aspect of their visit.
