At just 16 years old, Jake Caruana has already made a name for himself in the culinary world, breaking barriers and establishing himself as Malta’s newest Private Chef.
His journey began at a tender age, and now, he is creating waves with his innovative dishes and passion for the art of cooking.
Growing up, Jake's kitchen adventures started at the age of 6 or 7, sparked by his mother's love for cooking. Maria Sammut, Chef Patron of Fifty-Nine Republic, served as Jake's initial inspiration. "My mum is the one who lit the fire at first, always helping her around in the kitchen," Jake reflects.
His grandmother, a role model in Maltese cuisine, further fueled his culinary curiosity. By the age of 12-13, Jake was already excelling in his skills, naturally mentored by Chef Sammut along the way.
The Young Chef acknowledges the importance of travel in his culinary development. "Visiting different countries, getting to know various cuisines, and experiencing new culinary adventures inspire me to keep on creating and moving forward," Jake shares.
His exposure to diverse cultures has undoubtedly influenced the richness and variety of his culinary creations.
Jake Caruana's role models extend beyond his family, with Chef Gordon Ramsay being a significant influence. He admires Ramsay's dishes and choice of ingredients, finding inspiration in the renowned Chef's culinary approach.
For someone so young, Jake has a clear favourite when it comes to cooking. "I really do enjoy creating pasta dishes, from simple ones for myself to extraordinary artistic pasta. The fine dining concept is my favourite, and I believe it exploits my full potential.
The Italian and French cuisines are among my favourites; giving me the technique to create grounded dishes," Jake reveals.
Embarking on a culinary career at such a young age isn't without its challenges. Jake, however, approaches obstacles with independence, focus, and a calm demeanour. Recently venturing into the world as a Private Chef, he quickly garnered attention, accumulating clients and receiving positive feedback for his culinary creations.
"My biggest satisfaction so far is seeing people's reactions and positive feedback for my journey and seeing people enjoy and appreciate my culinary creations," he says. As someone who already knows his life's calling, Jake judiciously allocates time to concentrate on what matters most.
Looking ahead, Jake Caruana has ambitious aspirations in the culinary world. "I want to keep improving to be as perfect as possible, as there is always something new to learn," he states.
His dreams include owning a successful restaurant, achieving a MICHELIN star, and maintaining a passion that sustains him throughout his journey. Jake is determined to keep moving forward positively, gaining more experience and breaking new ground in the culinary landscape.
In a world where age is often equated with experience, Jake Caruana is challenging norms and proving that passion, dedication, and talent know no age.
His journey is not just about cooking; it's proof of the power of following passion and the incredible heights that can be reached when fueled by determination and a love for the culinary arts.
