Q: Spazju Kreattiv has become a hub for Malta’s contemporary arts scene. How do you balance its artistic mission with its growing role in cultural tourism?
A: Our foundation is empowering artists and celebrating bold creativity. That will never change. At the same time, we recognise that authentic cultural experiences – rooted in real artistic vision, not stereotypes – can transform tourism. The key is letting artists lead. We support meaningful art that offers visitors a genuine insight into Malta’s creative pulse. When local impact and tourism appeal align, they fuel each other: a thriving arts scene attracts curious visitors, and engaged audiences inspire artists to push boundaries. That’s the dynamic we nurture.
Q: Your programme spans film, theatre, visual art, and outreach. How vital is creative risk-taking to your identity?
A: Creative risk is our oxygen. If we only programmed what’s safe, we’d become a museum of predictable ideas. To stay relevant, we must embrace experimentation and amplify underrepresented voices. Innovation and inclusivity go hand in hand. We support projects that challenge norms – even when they provoke debate – because that’s where growth and reflection happen. It’s not risk for its own sake, but a commitment to being future-facing and responsive to today’s complex cultural landscape. By nurturing this spirit, we ensure Spazju Kreattiv remains a catalyst for meaningful cultural dialogue.
Q: How is Spazju Kreattiv staying sustainable without compromising its artistic and historical integrity?
A: Our approach is multi-faceted. A key strategy is ongoing maintenance – protecting both the heritage building and its modern infrastructure. We’re also tackling accessibility challenges head-on, making the venue more inclusive. To remain commercially viable, we optimise daytime use of our spaces – hosting workshops, screenings, and private hires – without disrupting our core artistic programme, which runs in the evenings. This balance supports financial sustainability while safeguarding our mission.
Q: What opportunities exist for collaboration with Malta’s tourism sector?
A: There’s huge potential for deeper collaboration. Beyond artist talks and workshops, we could offer themed private tours, curated cultural itineraries, or exclusive events blending art, history, and gastronomy. Tourism operators can play a key role in creating immersive experiences that reflect Malta’s vibrant contemporary scene while enriching its cultural tourism offering.
