Q: What are the biggest challenges facing Gozo’s tourism industry, and how is the GTA supporting its members?
A: The biggest challenge tourism operators face today is the shortage of local human resources. While Gozo’s hospitality is rooted in its authentic, warm service, businesses increasingly rely on employees from across Europe and beyond.
The GTA is actively working to address this by advocating for improvements to the skills pass system and collaborating with the MTA and vocational institutions to encourage careers in Gozo’s tourism sector.
Q: How can Gozo balance economic growth with preserving its authentic appeal?
A: Gozo’s distinct charm is being eroded by rapid development, raising concerns among both residents and tourism operators. While the sector welcomes improvements to the tourism product, unchecked development threatens the island’s unique appeal. The GTA is not against progress but strongly advocates for responsible development that enhances Gozo’s tourism offering while minimising environmental impact. We continue to lobby authorities for policies that add value to the sector, support local businesses, and improve infrastructure while safeguarding Gozo’s identity.
Q: What initiatives are being prioritised to improve accessibility and sustainability?
A: Connectivity remains a key priority for Gozo’s tourism sector. We believe in a long-term, holistic approach to improving transport links, free from political influences. A strategic, multi-year plan is needed to ensure sustainable and consistent upgrades to the sea link between Gozo and Malta.
On sustainability, the GTA is actively involved in initiatives such as introducing waste separation facilities for accommodation clusters and collaborating with the Energy and Water Agency to implement energy efficiency measures and water conservation across the sector.
Q: How do you see Gozo’s tourism evolving, and what opportunities and challenges lie ahead?
A: Gozo has long been marketed as a unique, authentic destination, offering visitors a slower-paced, culturally rich experience distinct from the mainland. The island’s future success depends on preserving this authenticity – anchored in its natural beauty, rural character, and heritage.
The focus must be on quality tourism that meets visitor expectations, delivers economic benefits, and enhances both Gozo’s cultural and natural assets while improving the quality of life for locals
