Horeca Malta Webinars 30 September 2020

Horeca Webinar –
Post Summer: Is the Hospitality Industry geared up for the challenges ahead?

Wednesday 30 September : 14:00 – 15:00

Horeca Malta’s second webinar, entitled “Post-Summer: Is the Hospitality Industry geared up for the challenges ahead?” was held on Wednesday 30 September 2020.

The webinar assessed how the Hospitality Industry needs to gear itself for the coming ‘winter’ months following the upheaval caused by COVID.

After around three months of inactivity, the industry opened up to business again in early July. First results were a pleasant surprise as the level of demand exceeded initial cautious expectations. This level of demand increased in the beginning of August, however it dwindled as the number of COVID-19 cases increased all over Europe throughout September.

The local industry, to varying degrees, managed to get through as it benefited from measures that encouraged staycations, as this complemented the slow flow of visitors originating from overseas markets.

As we now come to the end of summer, demand is expected to slow down further. The situation can be exacerbated with an increased medical threat of the virus. In this scenario, what does the future hold for the local hospitality industry?

The webinar included messages from Silvio Schembri, Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Business and Alan Borg, Chief Executive Officer at MIA. Other speakers were:

Tony Zahra – President, Malta Hotels & Restaurants Association
Iain Tonna – President, Federated Association of Travel and Tourism Agents
Raphael Aloisio – Partner & Leader Financial Advisory, Deloitte
The discussion was moderated by Terence Mirabelli, Editor of Horeca Malta Magazine.
