Q: How does the Malta International Airport collaborate
with airlines and tourism stakeholders to encourage
more off-peak travel?
A: Malta International Airport stood out as a top
performer among its southern European peers in 2024,
particularly during the winter months, which saw a 21%
increase in passenger traffic. Encouraging year-round
travel remains a key priority, as we continue to work
closely with the Maltese government, the Ministry for
Tourism, and the Malta Tourism Authority on a joint traffic
development strategy.
Our focus is on strengthening connectivity with additional
year-round frequencies to attract different travel
segments while diversifying our source markets. In fact, in
2025, we are launching several new routes: Copenhagen
(Scandinavian Airlines) in March, Rzeszów (Ryanair) and
Warsaw (LOT Polish) in April, Bordeaux (Volotea) in May,
Helsinki (Norwegian) and Stuttgart (Eurowings) in June,
and Doha (Qatar Airways) in July.
By collaborating with airlines and stakeholders, we aim to sustain Malta’s air traffic growth while enhancing its appeal as a year-round destination.
Q: What initiatives has Malta International Airport
implemented to enhance the experience for travellers,
particularly those visiting Malta?
A: We take pride in providing guests with an excellent first
and last impression of the Maltese Islands. Our recently
announced €345 million investment programme for 2025
to 2029 attests to this, with key projects including our new
Schengen arrivals corridor and the eastwards terminal
expansion reflecting our commitment to offering guests
the best possible airport experience.
Our efforts were also recognised in Airports Council
International’s Airport Service Quality rankings, where
we placed 8th among all participating European airports
and secured the title of ‘Best Airport in Europe’ in our size
category for the seventh consecutive year.
Q: What steps is Malta International Airport taking to
make travel to Malta more sustainable?
A: Sustainability remains a key priority for us. We
launched our Net Zero Carbon 2050 Roadmap last year,
setting an ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutral
status by the end of this year. We have also just attained
Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme,
demonstrating progress in emissions reduction and
stakeholder engagement.
Environmental considerations also remain central to our investments, ensuring that while we grow our built footprint, we continue to reduce our carbon footprint.
